CHAPTER VII

A Theoretical Absurdity

When the Professor parked her old bicycle outside Miss Fay’s cottage, she sighed with relief. Back safe and sound. No sign of those awful Ogri – not yet, at any rate. When she let herself into the cottage, however, she felt distinctly uneasy. After all, she had lived here for months, paying her whack, of course, but she had come to think of Vivien Fay as a friend. And Emilia Rumford valued friendship highly. What she was doing now made her feel like a burglar, which was silly, she conceded, because she had a key. But it still didn’t feel right.

Come on, old girl, she told herself. Don’t go soft now. The Doctor and Romana are relying on you. Time to get your skates on and find these blasted crystals – if they do exist!

It was then, as she looked around the familiar surroundings of the cottage, that the enormity of her task struck home. Where could you hide tritium crystals – whatever they might be – in a small country cottage on Bodcombe Moor? Where do I start, she wondered? What if I can’t find them?

Be positive, she told herself. Don’t give way to defeatism. She decided that the best way to search the cottage was to treat it as an ancient tomb. An archaeological site that hid some precious artefact. The trick, as someone she knew who had successfully excavated ancient Mayan sites in Central America had told her, was to learn to think like the Maya. In this case, think like Vivien Fay.

Where would Vivien hide something that must have been vital to her wellbeing here on Earth? In the garden? No, she decided. Vivien had never shown the slightest interest in horticulture ever since she had known her. Besides, you couldn’t be sure that your cache would remain undiscovered. Rabbits, badgers, stray dogs and inquisitive children might dig it up at any time. Moreover, if the crystals were that important to you, you would want to keep them close at hand. Therefore, logic decreed that they must be somewhere inside the cottage, and easily available.

Professor Rumford began in Vivien’s bedroom. It might have been the logical place to start, but it made her feel more like a burglar than ever. She searched through the various drawers of the dressing table, and even went to the extent of feeling in the pockets of the clothes hanging in the wardrobe. She did not find any crystals, but she did find a jewel box. She had always admired Vivien’s jewellery – particularly that heavy quartz pendant she always wore, which unsurprisingly was absent from the box. That was some sort of modern piece, whereas her other jewellery here was clearly much older. No wonder, she thought, if the Doctor’s right about Vivien’s past. The wicked Lady Montcalm must have amassed quite a lot of trinkets in the course of her eventful life – but, as soon became clear, she didn’t keep them with her tritium crystals.
